On December 1, 2024, the People’s Republic of China updated its existing framework for export control with a new Regulation on Export Control of Dual-Use Items. This new Regulation seeks to establish a more comprehensive administrative and regulatory export control system, serving to modify, update and in part supersede the Chinese Export Control Law of 2020.
On February 13, 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order on ‘Reciprocal Trade and Tariffs’, raising country-specific tariffs on imports into the U.S. by its trading partners, “friend or foe”, based not only on the official tariffs faced by American businesses exporting into their respective markets, but on U.S. government officials’ estimation of the cost to American exporters of non-tariff barriers and measures such as Value-added tax (VAT) deemed to be ‘tariff-like’.
